Thirty-six nonprofit community health centers across Massachusetts, from the Berkshires to the Cape and Islands, were awarded $143 million—an average of $3.98 million each—from the recently enacted American Rescue Plan response to the coronavirus pandemic, which for some grantees represents the largest financial infusion in their history.
The funds must be spent within two years and requires each organization to submit a budget plan for the grants, according to the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, which recently announced the grants.
Eliza Lake, CEO of Hilltown Community Health Centers (HCHC), based in Worthington, which serves residents in Hampshire County and the western Hilltowns of Hampden County, said, its $1.8 million grant is the largest ever received, according to a report in the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
“We are at the moment financially stable,” Lake was quoted, noting that while HCHC’s revenues declined due to loss of patient revenue, PPP loans and other support from state and federal programs helped stabilize it. ”Certainly this grant will help with that.”
